Pastor's Devotion

A friend told me recently that we Christians need to attack evil and perverted efforts which are downgrading society. I'm not a pacifist; however I believe the answer to a world gone mad is to live in Christ daily and in every compartment we have developed for our lives. I am reminded of the writings of Ignatius of Alexander (c.35-c.107A.D.). He wrote: "What should we do about those around us who are not believers? Certainly we should pray for them, not just occasionally or as a matter of routine but all the time, in the hope they may have a change of heart and so find their way to God.

But we should also give them every opportunity to learn the truth of Christ from us, not so much, perhaps, by our preaching it to them in so many words, but by the way we behave towards them. Our attitude should reflect the attitude of Christ." Christ would have us meet hostility with gentleness, anger with calm words, and when abused we should pray. We are never to compromise our beliefs. In Christ it is possible stand firm against violence and error while remaining calm and gentle. Our attitude should be that of the Lord Jesus. If we imitate Christ, we won't go wrong. We may not change the world but God will certainly look with favor upon us.
